John Chandler

Born at Missouri in 1833 and died in 1862.

John Chandler was a Missourian who married Martha Jane Whitehead and died young, leaving her to bring up their children alone.1–2 His name is known from the death certificate of his youngest daughter, Sarah Ellen "Ella" Chandler, who was born on 4 March 1863.1 He had died by June 1870, when Martha Jane, called Jane, was keeping house in Osage Township, Crawford County, as the head of a household of five children: Thomas, 18; George, 14; James, 11; William H., 8; and Sarah E., 6.2 Family trees say that he died in 1862, a few months before Sarah was born, but no record of his death has been found.

His daughter gave Missouri as her father's birthplace in the censuses of 1880 and 1910 (and 1900 and 1920); her death certificate says "unknown". His eldest known child was born about 1852, so he was probably born by about 1833. The FamilySearch tree gives 1831.

    Sarah Ellen's death certificate names John Chandler and Martha Jane Whitehead as her parents; the eldest son in Martha Jane's household of 1870, Thomas, was 18, so born about 1852. The marriage is placed before about 1852 on that basis only.

    His daughter Sarah Ellen was born on 4 March 1863, so he was living in mid-1862; by June 1870 his wife Jane was the head of the household in Crawford County, with no husband present. The FamilySearch tree says he died in 1862, five months before Sarah's birth, but no record of his death has been seen.

No record showing John with the family has been seen, so the link is probable, not proven.
