   The 1900 census, which asked each person's month and year of birth, gives Mar 1845, Switzerland (as abstracted in the family tree; the image has not been read), and her age in 1880 points to about 1845, also Switzerland. The Lawton gravestone of Mary A. Hegnauer, probably hers, gives 1 Mar 1841: the same month, four years earlier. The census year is preferred; where in Switzerland she was born is not known.

   Date and place of the marriage are not known. She was John Hegnauer's wife at the census of June 1880; the 1900 census gives 18 years of marriage, which points to about 1882 (see Research Notes).

   The 1880 census of Kansas City lists Mary, born about 1845 in Switzerland, as the wife of John Hegnauer, and the 1900 census of Webb City lists her again as his wife. The 1900 census's 18 years of marriage (about 1882) conflicts with the 1880 census and is not accepted. No marriage record has been found.

   Probable identification (the qualifier marks the identification, not the date, as uncertain): the Mary A. Hegnauer (1 Mar 1841 – 21 Feb 1907) buried in Highland Cemetery, Lawton, where a John Hegnauer of her husband's age was a registered voter in 1906–1908.

   Find a Grave records a Mary A. Hegnauer, born 1 Mar 1841, died 21 Feb 1907, in Highland Cemetery, Lawton, Oklahoma. A John Hegnauer born about 1840–1841, the age of her husband, was a registered voter at Lawton in 1906, 1907 and 1908, and her husband entered the Soldiers' Home at Leavenworth in 1909, two years after this death. Her birth month, March, agrees with the 1900 census, but the year is four years earlier. No other Mary Hegnauer of her age is known. Identified as probable, not proven: no death record, obituary or record linking her to John has been found.
