Catharina Appel was born about 1847.1 According to an Appel family account she was a daughter of Jacob Appel and Julia Duft of Highland, in Madison County, Illinois, a town settled largely by Swiss and German immigrants.2

On 24 August 1869, in Madison County, she married John Hegnauer, a Swiss-born Union cavalry veteran from Igis, Graubünden, whose brother Leonhard had married at Highland three years before.3 When the census taker came in 1870, the newlyweds were farming near Grantfork, a few miles from Highland: John was 29 and Catharine 23, and she was keeping house.1 Family trees name a son, Carl Lucius, born in 1872 (see his profile).

Catharina died young. By June 1880 John had remarried and was living in Kansas City with his second wife, Mary.4 The Appel family account says that Catharina died after the stillbirth of a child.2 Family trees give her death as 24 October 1876 at Highland, but no record of it has yet been found.

    Family trees give 24 Oct 1876 at Highland, Madison County, without a source. An Appel family account says she died after the stillbirth of a child.

    By the census of June 1880 her husband John had a second wife, Mary, in Kansas City, so Catharina had died by then; divorce is not suggested by any record. The Appel family account, a secondary source, says that she died after a stillbirth but gives the year as 1887, which cannot be right. The trees' date, 24 Oct 1876, at Highland, is plausible but has no source.

  • Identity: The Catharina Appel who married John "Haegnauer" in Madison County in Aug 1869 is the Catharine, 23, wife of John Hagenauer, married that August, in the 1870 census at Grantfork.3, 1 The facts come from the Ancestry tree's attached records; the images have not been re-read.
  • Birth: The family trees and the FamilySearch tree (Katherina Appel, G943-MDZ) give 20 Apr 1847 at Baltimore, Maryland, without a source. Her age in 1870 fits 1847.1 The 1870 census's birthplace column for her has not been read and should be checked.
