Hans Rudolf Hegnauer was baptised at Uster, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, on 26 March 1775, and very probably died there in March 1845, not quite seventy.^1–2 He was the son of Salomon Hegnauer and Barbara Hoffmann, and it is the entry of his marriage to Regula Grob in 1817, written into the register of Würenlos in canton Aargau as well as at Uster, that names them.³ His only known child, Regula, married the son of another Regula Hegnauer who was probably his elder sister, which would make the bride and groom first cousins.⁴

Early life

Hans Rudolf was the second of Salomon and Barbara's known children. His sister Regula had been baptised at Uster in September 1773, a year and a half before him.⁵ A brother, Hans Heinrich, was baptised in July 1778 and died on 4 August, a month later, and ten years afterwards, in May 1788, the name was given again to another brother.^6–8 Between the two there was very probably a Johannes, born about 1785, who died on New Year's Day 1787.⁹ The youngest, Lisenbeth, was baptised in April 1790, when Hans Rudolf was fifteen.¹⁰

The family's church was Uster's, and Uster was an old parish: until Volketswil became a parish of its own in 1638, it had included the village of Hegnau.¹¹

Marriages

On 27 October 1799, at twenty-four, Hans Rudolf probably married Susanna Spillmann at Uster.¹² No child of theirs has been found, and nothing more is known of Susanna. Hans Rudolf's father was very probably the Salomon Hegnauer, born about 1746, who was buried at Uster on 17 January 1811.¹³

On 4 May 1817, at forty-two, Hans Rudolf married Regula Grob at Uster.¹⁴ Her burial entry gives her birth year as 1796, so she was about twenty-one.¹⁵ Nine days later, on 13 May, the marriage was entered again in the register of Würenlos, across the cantonal border in Aargau, with Hans Rudolf's birth year and the names of his parents.³ The wedding fell in the second of two famine years: Switzerland suffered famine in 1816 and 1817.¹⁶

Their daughter Regula was baptised at Uster on 7 September 1817.¹⁷ That autumn Hans Rudolf's sister Regula, who had married Johannes Homberger in 1798, had her twelfth child baptised in the same church: a son, Rudolf, on 30 November.^18–19

The cousins' wedding

The two children of that autumn grew up to marry each other. On 2 November 1840 Regula, twenty-three, married Rudolf Homberger at Uster. The entry names both sets of parents, Rudolf Hegnauer and Regula Grob for the bride, and Johannes Homberger and Regula Hegnauer for the groom, and it gives the birth year of each as 1817. The wedding was entered in a Zürich register as well.⁴ Their daughter Sophie, Hans Rudolf's first known grandchild, was baptised at Uster in December 1840.²⁰

Hans Rudolf died at Uster on 15 March 1845 and was buried there on the 19th.² Regula outlived him by twenty-eight years. She very probably died at Uster on 4 September 1873, and the register of her burial still names her husband, Rudolf Hegnauer.¹⁵ By then their granddaughter Sophie had married Heinrich Schneider at Uster, in November 1860.²¹

Parents: Proven. The Würenlos entry of his marriage gives his birth year as 1775 and names Salomon Hegnauer and Barbara Hoffmann, the parents named at the Uster baptism of Hs Rudolff on 26 Mar 1775.^{1, 3}
First marriage (probable): The Rudolf Hegnauer who married Susanna Spillmann at Uster on 27 Oct 1799 is taken to be Hans Rudolf because (1) the index gives the groom's birth year as 1774, a year from Hans Rudolf's baptism of March 1775, and computed years are often a year out; (2) Hans Rudolf is the only Rudolf Hegnauer baptised at Uster in those years in the index; (3) at forty-two in 1817 he was of an age to be a widower. Against it, no child of Rudolf and Susanna is indexed, and Susanna's burial has not been found. The Rudolf Hegnauer who married Anna Maria Schneider at Gossau on 23 Jun 1811, whose age is not indexed, is another candidate for the groom of 1799.^{12, 22} The Uster register image, which may name the groom's father, would decide.
Würenlos: The index does not say why the marriage was entered at Würenlos nine days after the Uster wedding. The study's Aargau notes take Regula Grob for a bride from Aargau; the Würenlos image, with her parents and home, would show whether that is so.³
His burial (probable): The Uster burial of Rudolf Hegnauer (died 15 Mar 1845, buried 19 Mar, born 1776 by the index; two index entries, the second with the place given only as "Schweiz") names no kin. It is taken to be his because the name, place and age fit, no other Rudolf Hegnauer of that age is known at Uster, and his widow's burial in 1873 names her husband Rud Hegnauer.^{2, 15} The register image may name his wife.
Regula Grob's burial (probable): Indexed as Reg Hegnauer, born 1796, husband Rud Hegnauer; the maiden name is not given in the index.¹⁵
The groom of 1840: The Uster entry gives Rud Homberger the birth year 1817 and the parents Joh Homberger and Regula Hegnauer, so he was Rudolf, baptised 30 Nov 1817, the youngest of their twelve children, not the Hans Rudolf baptised in 1812.^{4, 19} That he and his bride were first cousins rests on his mother being Salomon's daughter, which is probable (see her profile).
Salomon's family: Salomon's own parents are not known. He may have been a son of Heinrich Hegnauer and Dorothea Meyer, the earlier Hegnauer couple at Uster (possible; not linked). A Herr Salomon Hegnauer, born about 1788 by his burial at Uster in October 1842, is not linked to any family.²³
Uster castle? The Dictionnaire historique et biographique de la Suisse (1928) says that the family "von Hegnau", also called Hegnauer, was found at Uster castle in the 18th and 19th centuries, and that it is not known whether that family was related to the Hegnauers of Elgg and Seengen.²⁴ No record ties Hans Rudolf's family to it; the statement should be checked against the Uster registers before anyone relies on it.
