  • Jacob × Verena Siegrist → Rudolph (d. 1931): proven. (1) Rudolph's 1931 notice names his brothers Jacob, John and Albert and his sister Lena Logemann (1d). Jacob Rudolph's parents are proven by his NUMIDENT (O02316), and the other notices name the same set of siblings (1e, 1f). (2) Rudolph is in Jacob's own arrival group of 2 Apr 1884 (1b). "In his 74th year" dates his birth to Apr 1857–Mar 1858, which agrees with Find a Grave (1857).
  • Jacob × Verena → Albert Gottlieb (1870–1944): proven. (1) His 1897 passport gives his birth on 5 Mar 1870 at "Sengen, Aargau", the Seengen of Jacob Rudolph's NUMIDENT. (2) It also gives his emigration from Havre on "La France" in March 1884, which is the France that landed Jacob (58) and "Albert, 11" on 2 Apr 1884. (3) The 1931, 1933 and 1940 notices name him as brother of Rudolph, John and Jacob R. (4) He and Jacob Rudolph were naturalized in the same court on the same day, 18 Feb 1892 (1a, 1n).
  • Jacob × Verena → John Henry and Jacob Rudolph: already proven. Confirmed by the sibling lists above.
  • Lina (b. c.1865) = Mrs. Lena Logemann (Logeman) of Rochester: proven as a sister (1d, 1e, 1f, 1g), and so a daughter of Jacob × Verena. She was "Lina, 19" in the 1884 party.
  • Luise (b. 1846) who married Rudolf Buchli in 1869 (O01991) is the "Mrs. Louise Buchli in Switzerland" of 1933: proven. Her married name, her given name and both parents' names match. Rudolph's 1931 notice has "one sister in Switzerland".
  • Rudolph × Louise Thut → Charles Albert (b. 8 May 1884, Switzerland): proven. (1) Rudolph's 1931 notice names three sons, Fred, Charles and William. (2) "Carl, 6/12", aged six months on 30 Oct 1884 and so born about May 1884, landed with Louise (23) and Frederick (1), bound for Rochester (1c). This settles open question 3 in .
  • Rudolph → Frederick Rudolph (1883): proven. The 1931 notice names Fred; the Oct 1884 list has Frederick, 1, with Louise.
  • "Carl (b. c.1862) × Marie" (US-ROC-067/068) is an artefact of the index. Carl was the six-month-old baby. Maria (22) is unidentified: perhaps a relative or a maid.
  • The 59-year-old woman on the Oct 1884 list: probably Verena Siegrist (born about 1826). Her age fits, and she travelled with Louise, the family's daughter-in-law. The first name cannot be read with certainty, so the link is only probable.
  • Verena (b. c.1852): still possible. She was "Verena, 32" in the Oct 1884 group. No later record was found.
  • John Henry → Edward John (1901–1961): proven. (1) John H.'s 1933 notice names "Edward Hegnauer of Boulder City, Nevada" among his sons (1e). (2) The 1959 notice of Thelma Drees, whose parents are proven by her marriage, names "Edward, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio" among her brothers (1h). (3) These agree with his Rochester birth on 13 Aug 1901 and the 1910 household. His 1961 death notices name no relatives, and his Ohio death certificate and SS-5 are not indexed on Ancestry.
  • A third Seengen identifier: in 1914 a "Mr. & Mrs. J. Hegnauer" sailed from New York to Seengen (1m). Jacob (55) and Carolina (49) came back on 3 Oct 1914 (1n). The identification with Jacob Rudolph and Caroline is probable (ages and residence).

What this changes in the map

  • US-ROC-003 (Rudolph) and US-ROC-047 (Albert Gottlieb): parents probable → proven. Rudolph was born 1857/58.
  • US-ROC-070 (Lina): parents possible → proven. Add her married name Logemann/Logeman, of Rochester, living in 1944.
  • US-ROC-059 (Charles Albert): "unknown parents" → son of Rudolph × Louise Thut. Move him and his family (US-ROC-060 to 062) under Rudolph. Record the 1884 arrival "Carl, 6/12" (O02783 should be re-placed on him).
  • US-ROC-067/068 (Carl b. 1862, Marie): delete as a couple. The Maria (22) of the Oct 1884 list is unplaced.
  • US-ROC-006 (Frederick Rudolph): probable → proven.
  • US-ROC-033 (Edward John): parents probable → proven. Add Boulder City, Nevada, 1933, and the marriage of 24 Nov 1938 at Idaho Springs, Colo.
  • O01991 (Luise × Rudolf Buchli, 1869): proven daughter of Jacob × Verena.
  • The Oct 1884 woman aged 59: add to US-ROC-002 (Verena Siegrist) as a probable arrival record.
  • New unplaced record: Rudolf Hegnauer, died 15 Sep 1885 at Penfield, Monroe Co. (NY death index no. 21678). It may be a child of the family; the certificate is needed.
  • For the Swiss mapping: the passport's "Sengen, Aargau" is the second independent statement of Seengen as the family's home, after Jacob Rudolph's NUMIDENT.

Verdicts

  • Wilhelm (b. c.1842) = William Nicolas Hegnauer, father of James Ernest: proven. (1) James's SS application names his parents as William N. and a mother née Zwickel, the rare maiden name of Wilhelm's Newark bride of 1873. (2) His 1918 draft card names his father as William Nicolas Hegnauer, then living at Neuchâtel.
  • James Ernest (1880–1948) belongs to this family: proven (as above). He was Swiss-born, not Swedish: the 1918 card and the Alien Registration give Switzerland, and the 1942 card gives La Chaux-de-Fonds. The NUMIDENT "Sweden" is an error.
  • Wilhelm's birthplace or home town: not found. What is known is his father Rudolph and his trade (engraver; he married at Newark's German Presbyterian church). The family was in the Neuchâtel watch-making district by 1880 (James born at La Chaux-de-Fonds), and William Nicolas was living at Neuchâtel in 1918. His Swiss place of citizenship (Heimatort) is still unknown, so nothing yet ties him to Seengen, Igis or the Zürich lines.
  • Wilhelm → Louis Arnold (1874–1925): probable (upgraded from possible). (1) Louis was born at Newark on 28 Feb 1874, eleven months after Wilhelm's marriage there. (2) A Louis Hegnauer, 18, Swiss, arrived from Le Havre in 1892, which fits a Newark-born son brought up in Switzerland after the family's return. (3) James Ernest, a proven son of Wilhelm, lived in Newark, Orange and Irvington in 1927–1948 alongside Louis's widow and daughters, and is buried in the same Woodland Cemetery. No record names Louis's parents.
  • James Ernest = the James of Nebraska (1910) and Washington (1920): probable. The name, the Swiss birth in 1880/81 and the arrival in 1906 agree, he was in the West (San Francisco) in 1918, and no other James Hegnauer appears in any U.S. index. No record connects the three places directly.

What this changes in the map

  • US-NWK-001 (Wilhelm): add the name William Nicolas, the occupation engraver, the church (First German Presbyterian, Newark) and his residence at Neuchâtel in 1918. The family returned to Switzerland between 1874 and 1880.
  • US-NWK-008 (James Ernest): parents proven (US-NWK-001 × US-NWK-002). Correct his birthplace to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Neuchâtel. The Nebraska and Washington records (O02962, O02923) go from possible to probable. Add San Francisco, 1918.
  • US-NWK-003 (Louis Arnold): parents possible → probable. Place the 1892 arrival (US-NYC-014) on him as probable.
  • The Newark cluster should now be described as a Neuchâtel-based Swiss family (La Chaux-de-Fonds). Its Heimatort is the next question: Swiss family registers, and the Neuchâtel civil register for 1880.

3. Chicago: "Untin" Hegnauer (d. 8 Jul 1897) = Nutt H0381?

Verdict

Probable, and stronger than before; not proven. (1) The state index reads the given name as Nutin, the Igis form of the name used for H0381 himself at his children's baptisms (Nuttin 1856/1859, Nutin 1862/1867). The Cook County "Untin" is a misreading of it. (2) His age at death, 63 on 8 Jul 1897, puts his birth between Jul 1833 and Jul 1834, which contains Nutt's birth on 30 Mar 1834. (3) He was Swiss-born and married. His brother Christian (H0418) married in Cook County in 1884. No record seen names his parents or his place of birth.

What this changes in the map

  • H0381: keep the link at probable. Add the certificate number (7291), age 63, "married", and burial at Forest Home on 11 Jul 1897.
  • The next step is the Cook County death certificate no. 7291 of 1897 (Cook County Clerk genealogy service), which may give his parents, birthplace and informant. The Forest Home (Forest Park) interment register may give the grave owner. The "N. Hegnauer" at Leavenworth in 1880 (US-KS-001) is still unresolved.

Verdicts

  • Wilbur Conzett Hegnauer (H0423) → Wilbur Morris: proven. The birth certificate names the father as Wilbur C., age 35, born at Columbus, Ohio. H0423 was born at Columbus on 3 Apr 1893 and so was 35 in March 1929. The mother, Freda C. G. Hipp, is the bride of Wilbur C.'s La Porte marriage of 9 Mar 1929, whose record names his parents Christian × Cornelia Conzett. The "William" of the Social Security indexes was already in the 1943 SS-5 and is an error, not a second man.
  • H0423 → Jacqueline Jean (1932–1999): not supported by her birth certificate. She was registered as illegitimate with the father "Unknown", although her mother was using the surname Hegnauer. The later "William Hegnauer" of her NUMIDENT and 1950 marriage index is not evidence of paternity. At best this is possible.

  • US-MN-013 (Frieda C. G. Hipp): born about 1908–09 at Chesterton, Ind.; at Hammond, Ind., in Jan 1932.
  • H0423's two marriages: by 1932 the Indiana relationship had apparently ended. He was back with Ina at Mansfield by 1940.

Verdict

  • Samuel's origin: Seengen, proven for the family. Hedy was born at Seengen, her Heimatort was Seengen, and she lived there until 1949. Samuel therefore belonged to the Seengen Hegnauers.
  • Samuel's arrival: not supported. Nothing shows that Samuel ever came to America. The emigrant was Hedy herself, who arrived on 7 Mar 1949 at the age of 40. The family was in Switzerland, not California, when she was born.
  • How Samuel is related to the 1884 Rochester family, or to Samuel × Anna Engel (CH-AG-F05), is not established.
