FamilySearch research, 27 Sep 2026: Igis before 1744, Seengen, Elgg before 1695, the Familiennamenbuch

Read this first — what "transcribed" means here. Every register this note needed (Igis, Elgg, Baden AG, the Aargau censuses, the Zürich Bevölkerungsverzeichnisse) is on FamilySearch as digital images that are "viewable at a FamilySearch Center / affiliate library" only. From home the film viewer shows padlocks. No register image was read. Everything quoted below is the FamilySearch index entry, copied exactly (spelling, dates, names as indexed), with the record ARK (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:<id>), the digital folder (DGS) and the image number FamilySearch gives for that entry. Readings in square brackets are mine. The image numbers are there so that someone at a FamilySearch Center (or an affiliate library) can open the exact page.

The most important method finding. The study's index extract (the study's index of records) was harvested under the spelling Hegnauer. It missed every entry written Hagenauwer, Hagenauer, Hegenauerin, Hegnauwer, Hognouwer, Hegnouwer, Hegnower, Hegneuer, Heguaner, Heganuer, and every child whose own surname was left blank by the indexer (the child appears only as "Hanss Heinrich" with the father "Jacob Hegrnauer"). That is why the Igis family seemed to start in 1744 and the Elgg baptisms seemed to start in 1695: both registers are indexed much earlier, under other spellings. None of the records in sections 1 and 3 below is in the study's index of records (checked).

1. Igis (Graubünden) before 1744

What exists (FamilySearch Catalog)

• No Bürgerregister, Burgerbuch or Familienregister for Igis is in the FamilySearch catalog. The nearest substitutes are the Brandsteuerbuch 1717 (a household list two years after the first Hegnauer marriage), the Dorfrechte 1705–1852 (admissions to village rights), the Rechnungsbuch 1722–1785 (Einkauf payments would be booked there) and the Hintersassenbuch 1792 (non-citizen residents).
• Gaps in the church book: baptisms 1738–1740, marriages 1740–1743, burials 1736–1742 are not in the catalogued ranges. The index is dense before 1715 (e.g. Hartmann entries of 1617, 1619, 1649–1661, 1703, 1706, 1713, 1714), so the absence of Hegnauers before 1715 is real evidence, not an indexing gap.

What I viewed

The Igis film (DGS 8014188) is padlocked from home; the record pages' "Check image availability" says: "To view these images do one of the following: access the site at a FamilySearch center; access the site at a FamilySearch affiliate library." I then searched the index of DGS 8014188 for every Hegnauer spelling (surname Heg*, Hag*, H*a*er; father's and mother's surname Heg*, Hag*, H*; given names Nut*, mother Leda) and opened each hit.

Nothing in the index says where Jacob came from. The index records no residence, origin, "von …", Hintersäss or Einkauf note for any of these entries. Whether the register itself says so can only be seen on the images (I-1 image 159 is the one to read first).

My reading of the evidence

1. First Igis Hegnauer entry: the marriage of Jacob "Hagenauwer" to Margreth Hartmann, 1 Mar 1715 (image 159). There is no Hegnauer (any spelling) in the Igis index from 1616/1617 to 1714, although the index covers those years densely. On the index, the family arrives at Igis about 1715 with an adult man.
2. Jacob's two marriages. Margreth Hartmann (b. c.1681, of an old Igis family) died in Feb 1724 aged 43; four months later, 23 Jun 1724, Jacob married "Leda Kujany" — read Leta Gujan(in): the four indexings Kujany / Küjanin / Bujanim / Bujani / "Ce Lujanin" are one name, and Gujan (feminine Gujanin) is a Graubünden family indexed at neighbouring Zizers in the 1730s (Elsbeth Gujani, Dorothea Gujanin). Leta (Adelheid) is a common Graubünden given name. (Reading: probable.)
3. Children: of Jacob × Margreth Hartmann: Hanss (bapt. 12 Dec 1715), Flori (bapt. 8 Apr 1717, bur. 14 Feb 1718). Of Jacob × Leta Gujan: Nuttin (bapt. 9 Aug 1725), Jacob (21 Jan 1727), Elsbeth (19 Jan 1731), Hanss Heinrich (24 Jan 1734). (Baptisms 1738–1740 are missing from the film.)
4. The two Igis stems join here (probable).
   • Nutt × Madlena Krädtli (children 1746–1762; study key CH-IGIS-001, F0062) = Nuttin, bapt. 9 Aug 1725, son of Jacob × Leta Gujan: the only Nutt at Igis of the right age, and the couple's first son (2 Jul 1746) is named Jacob, after the grandfather. Probable.
   • Johann Heinrich × Elsbeth Pfeiffer (m. 1763; buried 10 Feb 1801 "b. 1734", CH-IGIS-036) = Hanss Heinrich, bapt. 24 Jan 1734, son of Jacob × Leta Gujan: exact year match, only candidate. Probable (near-proven).
   • So Nutt and Johann Heinrich are full brothers, and both Igis stems descend from Jacob (m. 1715 and 1724). The compiler's line becomes: Jacob "Hagenauwer" (m. Igis 1715, 1724) → Nutt (b. 1725) × Madlena Krädtli → Christian (b. 1748, still possible) → Jakob (1783–1858) → Luzius (1819–1890), emigrant 1856.
   • The Jacob buried Aug 1744 is most likely the father (m. 1715; about 55–60), though his son Jacob (b. 1727, then 17) cannot be excluded on the index.
5. Elsbeth, wife of Conradin Michel (m. 22 Jan 1717, image 160) is written Hegenaverin / Hagenaderin / Hagenhauerin / Hegenaneri / Hegenauerin / Hegenaueri at the baptisms of six children 1720–1734. The 1717 marriage is indexed as "Hagmann", but a Hagmann family also lived at Igis (Hanss Hagmann × Anna Walster, m. 1730), so the identification of the 1717 bride is probable, not proven until image 160 is read. A FamilySearch Family Tree profile, Elsbeth Hegnauer 1690–1759 (K8T5-5HD, husband Conradin Michel 1681–1738, K843-8T4), exists with no sources for her birth or death and no parents. If she is Jacob's sister, two adult Hegnauer siblings married at Igis in 1715 and 1717 — the pattern of a family that had just moved in.
6. Spelling. The early Igis clerks wrote Hagenauwer / Hagenauer (with the Zürich-style -auwer), then Hegenauer(in), and from the 1740s Hegnauer. -auwer is the standard Elgg/Zürich spelling of the 17th century (Hegnauwer, Hognouwer; section 3), which fits a Zürich origin but proves nothing.

What it means for the map

• The compiler's line starts at Igis with Jacob, married there on 1 Mar 1715 — not with the 1744 burial. The two Igis stems are one family (probable).
• The family was new at Igis around 1715: no Hegnauer in a densely indexed register running from 1616/17, and adult siblings marrying in 1715 and 1717. This moves H1 from "no evidence either way" to "an immigration about 1710–1715 is the likely story". Where from is still unproven.
• Candidate origins to test: Elgg, where Hegnauers (spelled Hegnauwer) were numerous and several men named Hans Jacob were born 1667–1686 whose fates are not all known — e.g. Hans Jacob, bapt. 2 May 1686, son of Johannes × Anna Gessner (a burial of a Hans Jacob, son of Johannes, on 24 Mar 1720, ARK 66VQ-RK4L, no age, could be him or the 1719 infant of Johannes × Esther Koller). Two Elsbeths were baptized at Elgg in Jan 1689 (see section 3), which fits the FamilySearch tree's "Elsbeth b. 1690". All of this is only possible; no record links them.
• The Familiennamenbuch (section 4) has no Igis entry. In 1962 no Hegnauer family held Igis citizenship. Either the Igis line had died out in Switzerland by then, or the family was never admitted as Igis Bürger and kept an old citizenship elsewhere (Elgg?). The 1792 Hintersassenbuch and the Igis records of the 1850s (when Graubünden settled its non-citizens) can decide this.

What remains (Igis)

1. At a FamilySearch Center / affiliate library, DGS 8014188: read images 159 (marriage 1715 — any "von …"), 160 (1717 — is the bride Hegnauer?), 163 (1724), 110, 113, 130, 133, 139, 144 (baptisms), 215, 222, 353 (burials), 246 (1746). Also browse the 1743–1750 marriages for Nutt × Madlena Krädtli (not indexed).
2. DGS 8482680: Brandsteuerbuch 1717, Dorfrechte 1705–1852, Rechnungsbuch 1722–1785 — Jacob's household and any Einkauf/Hintersäss payment. DGS 8482682: Hintersassenbuch 1792 — are the Hegnauers listed as Hintersassen?
3. Elgg (DGS 8015177 and 8015187, section 3): the Haushaltungsrodel VI (1721), 1637–1722 should show whether an Elgg Jacob and Elsbeth were absent ("in Pündten") about 1715–1721.

2. Seengen (Aargau), and what "Baden, Aargau" means

What exists (FamilySearch Catalog)

• No catalog entry for Seengen (place search "Seengen": no results; "Lenzburg": only history/archives titles). The Seengen church books are not on FamilySearch, so Jacob's baptism (c.1825), the children's baptisms 1846–1870 and a Seengen Familienregister cannot be searched there. (They are at the Staatsarchiv Aargau / the Seengen civil registry.)
• "Baden, Aargau" is the Reformed parish of the town of Baden AG. Catalog 816044, Kirchenbuch, 1714–1875, Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche Baden (Aargau), filmed 1998 from the Stadtarchiv Baden:

• Every indexed Hegnauer marriage of 1817–1875 is in digital folder 008191943_004 (images 33 for 1826, 88 for 1847, 312 for 1869). A Baden baptism of 1854 is in folder _002, a Catholic burial in _001, so folder _004 = film item 4 = "Heiraten 1817–1875 (Auswärtige)", the register of marriages of non-residents celebrated in Baden's Reformed church (probable, from the folder numbering). The 1813 and 1815 marriages are in DGS 8127216, folder _004 (image 45 for 1813), the combined register 1792–1816.
• Reading: the "Baden, Aargau" Hegnauer entries are not a Baden family; they are Reformed couples from elsewhere who married at Baden. Their parents' and spouses' names — Siegrist, Studler, Engel, Häfeli, Sandmeier, Hauri, Häusler, Thut, Bolliger, Buchli — are Seetal/Lenzburg-district names, and the register of Auswärtige normally states each party's Heimatort. That fits the Seengen family, but the index gives no place of origin; the images must be read. (Ancestry note 1e in Ancestry research, 27 Sep 2026: key links in the American Hegnauer map: John H. Hegnauer's 1933 notice names his sister "Mrs. Louise Buchli in Switzerland", which confirms that Luise, m. Rudolf Buchli at Baden 1869, is Jacob × Verena Siegrist's daughter.)
• Aargau-wide sources on FamilySearch (Center-only): Bevölkerungstabellen, 1837 (catalog 592954; "surnames and given names, sex, places of citizenship and origin", by house number): Bezirk Lenzburg on film 1705872 → DGS 4126410. Bevölkerungstabellen, 1850 (catalog 593040; adds occupation): Bezirk Lenzburg on film 1705878 → DGS 4126416. Also Bevölkerungs- und Auswanderungsakten 1803–1840 (593043) and Zivilurkunden 1746–1876 (593049), Staatsamt Aarau. These are the best FamilySearch sources for the Seengen households of Jacob (b. c.1825), Jakob × Maria Studler and Samuel × Anna Engel.
• Von den Geschlechtsnamen im Seetal by R. Bosch (Seengen: Historische Vereinigung Seetal, 1937, 30 pp.), catalog 551966, film 1181985 item 6 → DGS 7962600. The catalog shows a camera icon, but the images I tried in that DGS outside the Schaffhausen item were "Image Restricted"; I did not find the Bosch pages. Die Familiennamen des 17. Jahrhunderts im Berner Aargau (Peter Steiner, SGFF 2004; catalog 1204137) is a book/CD at the FamilySearch Library only — it would show whether Hegnauer was at Seengen in the 1600s.

Searched surname Hegnauer with place Aargau, and all Heg*, H*gn*, Ha*n*er entries in DGS 8127216 and 8191943. Entries not already in the study (none of them is in the study's index of records):

The entries already in the study were confirmed with their folders: Luise, m. 10 May 1869 (6F8W-GLJZ; 008191943_004, image 312; groom Rudolf Buchli, b. 1824); Rudolf, m. 14 May 1852 (6F8W-TJG2); Jacob × Margaretha Läser, 26 Nov 1813 (6F8W-4TRF; 008127216_004, image 45); Elisabetha, m. 4 Dec 1846 (6F84-33YT).

Not found: the marriage of Jacob × Verena Siegrist (c.1845) — not at Baden under any Hegnauer spelling (they probably married at Seengen); any Swiss baptism of Jacob c.1825, Luise 1846, Rudolph, Jacob Rudolph (26 May 1859), John Henry, Albert Gottlieb, Samuel × Rosa Siegrist or Rudolf b. 1881 — none can be on FamilySearch because the Seengen registers are not filmed there.

Keep separate: Hagnauer. Baden also has many Hagnauer marriages (1796–1868: Joh Beat, Elisabeth, Anna Kleophea, Marianna, Margaretha, J Jac, Daniel × Salome Hauri, Friedrich, Wilhelm Emil, Eugen, Johann Gottlieb, Angelika, Maria Sophie). The Familiennamenbuch lists Hagnauer as an old citizen family of Aarau (section 4). They are a different name and should not be merged with Seengen.

My reading

• Seengen is an old Hegnauer citizenship (before 1800, section 4). With Ludwig (b. c.1770, son of Jacob × Maria Häfeli, m. 1826 Johanna Sandmeier) and Jakob (b. c.1800, son of Samuel × Barbara Hauri, m. 1847 Elisabeth Häusler; son Friedrich b. c.1848), the Aargau family now reaches back to parents married about 1765–1800. Seengen gains a generation, but how Jacob (b. c.1825) of Rochester fits is still open: son of Jakob × Maria Studler (children b. 1825 and 1828) remains possible.
• The Seengen family has no recorded link to Elgg or Igis; the Familiennamenbuch treats it as its own old centre.

3. Elgg (Zürich) before 1695

What exists (FamilySearch Catalog)

Kirchenbuch, 1551–1933, Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche Elgg (Zürich), catalog 309107, filmed 1955–1961 from the Staatsarchiv Zürich. All items: "viewable with additional restrictions / at a FamilySearch Center"; the church-book films are indexed.

Answer: baptisms before 1695 are indexed, back to 1553

says "baptisms from 1695 (earlier Elgg baptisms are not in the index)". That is wrong: they are indexed, under other spellings. Searching father's surname H*gn* / H*n*w* / Ho*n* in DGS 8014315 and surname H*gn* in DGS 8014314 (340 hits for 1553–1657) gives the following. (Images not viewable; index text.)

Elgg "Hegner" entries of that period therefore belong to the Hegnauer family. (The Familiennamenbuch's Hegner families are Winterthur, Kloten and March SZ — not Elgg.)

My reading: the chains the pre-1695 baptisms make (index-only)

• Jacob (I) of = Hans Jacob × Elsbeth Stadelmann, m. 28 Apr 1656 (children Heinrich 1659, H Jacob 1665, Hans Jacob 1667, Eva 1671, Margretha 1675). The Eva buried 8 Apr 1670 (father H Jacob) was an elder Eva.
• Hans Jacob × Margretha Stadelmann (m. 1698) = Hans Jacob, bapt. 6 Oct 1667, son of Hans Jacob × Elsbeth Stadelmann — probable: the only Hans Jacob of marrying age in 1698 (the others were born 1682 and 1686).
• Peter × Esther Trachsler (m. 1698) = Peter, bapt. 14 Jan 1672, son of Andres × Margreth Brünnwald (m. 1669) — probable: the only Peter in the 1658–1700 index. This carries the Uster line (Hans Heinrich, b. 1701, son of Peter × Trachsler, m. Uster 1730) one generation back, to Andres (m. 1669).

• Anna × Heinrich Spiller (m. 1683) and others: not checked.
• Caspar (m. 1712 and/or 1713): no Caspar baptism appeared in these searches — open.
• Johannes × Anna "Bessner" (daughter Anna, 1700) is very likely Johannes × Anna Gessner (Bessner/Gessner/Gesswein/Gestner/Frssner are one name).
• The Elgg cluster is therefore one continuous record family from 1553, much older than the 1659 "first record" in .

What remains (Elgg)

1. The images (FamilySearch Center) to confirm the four probable chains above, especially the 1698 marriages (DGS 8014315).
2. Haushaltungsrodel VI (1721), 1637–1722 and V (1785), 1702–1796 on DGS 8015177, and the rodel of 1657/58, 1659 and 1663 on DGS 8015187: they give whole households with ages and would settle all the Elgg chains at once — and show any Hegnauer "abwesend / in Pündten" around 1710–1721 (the Igis test in section 1).
3. Extract the full pre-1695 Elgg index into the study (about 340 entries for 1553–1657 and about 60 for 1658–1695 under the spellings listed above).

It lists every family that held citizenship (Bürgerrecht) in a Swiss commune in 1962, with the period of acquisition (a = before 1800; b = 19th century; c = 20th century, or a year) and, for later citizenships, the older Heimatort in brackets. A star (*) means the origin is unknown or the citizenship rests on special legal grounds (adoption, divorce etc.).

Hagnauer: Aarau AG, a (with later Basel 1933, Vernier GE 1927, Horgen ZH 1933, Zürich 1940, all "(Aarau AG)") and Turtmann VS, b — a separate Aarau family. Hegner: old (a) at Galgenen, Lachen, Schübelbach SZ and Kloten ZH; Winterthur 1430 — unrelated to Elgg's Hegnauers.

My reading

• Only two old (pre-1800) Hegnauer citizenships existed in 1962: Seengen AG and Elgg ZH. All later Hegnauer citizenships (Aarau, Basel, Mettmenstetten, Zürich) come from one of these two — five from Seengen, one from Elgg.
• Igis GR is not listed, nor is Uster or any Graubünden or St. Gallen place. The FamN omits families extinct in Switzerland by 1962, so this does not deny an Igis Bürgerrecht in the 1700s–1800s; but it fits the section 1 finding that the Igis family came in about 1715, and it raises a question worth testing: did the Igis Hegnauers keep an outside Heimatort (Elgg?) — or was the Igis line simply extinct in Switzerland by 1962?
• Seengen is an old, independent centre (like Elgg). No record joins it to Elgg.
