Hugh N. Cawkins is known only from the old family tree, which makes him the husband of Viola Curtis, the eldest daughter of Nathan K. Curtis and Louisa Thomas. According to that tree, which cites no record for him, he was born in Illinois about 1873, married Viola in Knox County, Illinois, on 25 October 1894, and died at Spencer, Clay County, Iowa, on 13 March 1928.1
The places fit what the records show of Viola's family. Her parents were renting a farm in Knox County in 1900, and by 1910 they had moved to Spencer, where they owned a house on East Fifth Street in 1920 and were still living in 1925 (see her father's profile).2 No record of Hugh himself has yet been read.
