Life story
Before 1930
Blanche Estelle Isherwood was born on 18 December 1892 in Minnesota, according to the California Death Index; her Social Security claim and Find a Grave give the same date.1–3 The death index gives a parent's surname, probably her mother's maiden name, as Ridgeway (see Research Notes).1 When she died, two women, Mrs. Lyla Williams of Santa Ana, California, and Mrs. Hazel Musburger of Bemidji, Minnesota, were named as her husband's sisters-in-law, so they were probably her sisters.4
On 19 October 1911, at eighteen, Blanche Estelle Isherwood married George John Hack at Wadena, in Wadena County, Minnesota.5 They had a son, Vincent Hack, who was living in San Antonio, Texas, when her second husband died in 1969; Find a Grave records her as Blanche E. "Heck" Hegnauer, a slip for Hack.3–4 How the first marriage ended has not been found.
Wells, Minnesota
On 22 November 1930, in Cass County, North Dakota, Blanche married Robert Lucius Hegnauer, a grain and feed salesman from Wells, Minnesota, whose first marriage, to Lotta Donnell, had just ended in divorce.4, 6 By 1935 the couple were living at Wells, in Faribault County, and in 1940 they were renting a house on Washington Avenue South, where Robert sold grain and feed on his own account.7 When Robert registered for the draft in April 1942, he named his wife, "Mrs. R. L. Hegnauer, Wells", as the person who would always know his address.8
Banning, California
By April 1950 Blanche and Robert had moved to Banning, in Riverside County, California, where they lived on Prince Street and Robert was teaching in a grade school. In the census she is "Blanch E.".9 Robert went on to manage the Banning Chamber of Commerce and, from 1960, to serve as the city's treasurer (see his profile).
Blanche died on 20 January 1969, aged 76, in Riverside County, and was buried in San Gorgonio Memorial Park at Banning.1, 3 Robert died eleven months later and was buried beside her; their flat bronze marker reads HEGNAUER / ROBERT L. / BLANCHE E. / 1887–1969 / 1892–1969.4, 10
