The records, and the stories in them

Most records say only that someone was born, married or buried. These say what happened.

• Court 1850 Igis, Graubünden

  Peter is declared bankrupt, and probably put under a guardian at his family's request

  In July 1850 the authorities of Igis declared Peter Hegnauer, son of Nutt, bankrupt; in August a guardian was set over "Peter Hegnauer", probably the same man, and his household, at the family's own request.

  Emigration 1856 Le Havre, to New York

  The family crosses on the Chace, and a seaman drowns

  In 1856 Luzius, Margreth and their five children sailed from Le Havre on a ship that met light winds and calms the whole way and lost a man from the bowsprit.

• War 1864 Ivey's Hill, Mississippi

  John's regiment charges with sabres at Ivey's Hill, very likely with John

  In the winter of 1864 John's regiment marched through bottoms of ice-filled water and then made a sabre charge that a rail fence stopped; John was very likely with it.

• War 1864 Gasconade County, Missouri

  Luzius, very probably, swears that Henry Domeyer betrayed Union men to the rebels

  Two weeks after Price's army passed through Gasconade County in 1864, Luzius very probably swore that Henry Domeyer had betrayed the Union men of his neighbourhood to the rebels.

• Emigration 1869 Madison County, Missouri

  Leonhard takes his family across Missouri by ox-team

  By the account of the county history of 1918, Leonhard and Susanna came from Illinois to the Kansas border in 1869 in wagons pulled by ox-teams, a trip of three weeks.

• Death 1916 Prairie City, Missouri

  A thousand come to bury Leonhard

  When Leonhard Hegnauer died in 1916, the Appleton City Journal put the crowd at his funeral at one thousand.

• Office 1366 Zürich (Neumarkt)

  In the tax book of 1366, Johans Hegenower is probably a cook

  In the Zürich tax book of 1366 the name Johans Hegenower stands over the struck-out words "sin koch", his cook: he was probably the household's cook.

• Wedding 1616 Elgg, canton Zürich

  Anthoni's wife dies eleven days after a baptism, and he remarries in nine weeks

  Margretha Holtz died in December 1615, eleven days after the baptism of her seventh child; on 7 February 1616 her widower, Anthoni Hegnauer, married Beatrix Lud at Elgg.

• Death 1629 Elgg, canton Zürich

  Seven Hegnauer burials at Elgg in 1629

  Between February and October 1629 the Elgg register recorded the deaths of at least seven Hegnauers, among them two sons of a Sebastian, or Baschi, probably brothers, and, in one fortnight of August, three entries naming an Ulrich.

• Wedding 1681 Volketswil, canton Zürich

  Widowed in June, Rudolf probably marries again in November

  Rudolf Hegnauer's wife Verena was buried at Volketswil in June 1681, and in November a Rudolf, probably the widower, married Susanna Kuhn.

• Office 1799 Igis, Graubünden

  When the Igis president stays away, a Hegnauer, possibly Christian, takes his place

  When the Salis-Marschlins property was sequestered in March 1799, the president of Igis stayed away and "Hegnauer" took his place: possibly Christian, who had signed the municipality's letter of 22 March.
