Hans Stutzmann, also written Johannes, was a citizen of Uebeschi, in the parish of Thierachern in Canton Bern, Switzerland, and very probably the father of Maria Stutzmann, who married Peter Hirschi in 1803. Through her he was the great-grandfather of Susanna Katharina Hirschi, who married Leonhard Hegnauer in Illinois in 1866.1–2

Uebeschi

Hans was very probably the Hans Stutzmann baptised at Thierachern on 23 January 1746, a son of Peter Stutzmann and Elsbeth Portner.3 Uebeschi, his home, was a small commune of 274 people in 1764, part of the parish of Thierachern.4 In September 1769 Hans, "Peter's son", married Anna Feller.5 Six of their children were baptised at Thierachern: Susanna in December 1769, Elisabeth in 1772, Johannes in 1776, Maria on 26 September 1779, Peter in 1784 and Christian in 1790. By Maria's baptism Hans's father seems to have died, and one of her godmothers was Anna's sister, Christina Feller.1, 6–7

Later years

Maria married Peter Hirschi of Schangnau at Thierachern in 1803, and in 1814 her brother Christen stood godfather to her son Christian.2, 8 Hans died on 24 June 1822 and was buried at Thierachern two days later, at seventy-eight.9 Anna died in May 1826, and Maria two years later, in 1828.10–11

The husband of Anna Feller was Peter's son at his marriage in 1769, and in 1779 his father was dead ("Peters sel." [?]), so the identification is probable; the burial index gives his age in 1822 as 78, two years more than the baptism implies.

The marriage ended with his death in 1822.
