Maria Stutzmann was baptised at Thierachern, in Canton Bern, Switzerland, on 26 September 1779, very probably the daughter of Hans Stutzmann and Anna Feller, citizens of Uebeschi.1–2 She was the wife of Peter Hirschi and the mother of Christian Hirschi, who took his family to Highland, Illinois, in 1850, and so the grandmother of Susanna Katharina Hirschi, who married Leonhard Hegnauer at Highland in 1866.3–4

Uebeschi

Uebeschi, a commune of 274 people in 1764, belonged to the parish of Thierachern, in the district of Thun.5 Maria's mother's sister, Christina Feller, was one of her godmothers.1 Her parents had at least five other children baptised at Thierachern: Susanna (1769), Elisabeth (1772) and Johannes (1776) before her, and Peter (1784) and Christian (1790) after her.6–7

Marriage and family

On 5 March 1803 Maria married Peter Hirschi, a citizen of Schangnau in the Emmental, in the church of Thierachern.8–9 Their first son, Peter, was baptised there seven weeks later, on 24 April 1803, and Johannes on New Year's Day 1805; Johannes died in December 1807, not yet three.10–12 On 18 August 1814 Maria gave birth to Christian, who was baptised at Thierachern ten days later, with her brother Christen Stutzmann and Peter's brother Jakob Hirschi as his godfathers; the family was then living at Uebeschi.13

Peter was a Küher, a dairyman and herdsman; Küher leased alpine pastures for the summer and wintered their cattle on valley farms.14–15 By 1828 the family was living in the parish of Amsoldingen. There, on 16 November 1828, Maria died of consumption, at forty-nine, and she was buried three days later. The pastor wrote her down as "Maria Hirschi of Schangnau, born Stutzmann, the wife of Peter the Küher".14

Her relatives appear again at the baptisms of Christian's children at Amsoldingen in the 1830s, where a Susanna Stutzmann of Uebeschi, an Anna Stutzmann, "Peter's daughter", a Johannes Stutzmann of Uebeschi and two men of the Feller family stood godparents.16–20 In 1850 her widower, Peter, emigrated to Illinois with Christian's family; her eldest son, Peter, stayed in Switzerland.21–22

    Baptised at Thierachern on 26 Sep 1779; her parents were citizens of Uebeschi, a village of Thierachern parish, which her Find a Grave memorial gives as her birthplace. Her age at her burial in Nov 1828 (49) fits. The identification of this baptism as hers is probable.

    The Thierachern baptism register (Staatsarchiv Bern, K Thierachern 7, p. 48; original, image read) records Maria, baptised 26 Sep 1779, daughter of Hans Stuzman and Ana Feller, citizens of Uebeschi. It is the only baptism of a Maria Stu(t)zmann at Thierachern from 1760 to 1790, and her burial entry of Nov 1828 gives her age as 49. See Research Notes for the identification (probable).

    The Amsoldingen burial register, 1828 no. 24 (original, image read), gives the death on 16 Nov and the burial on 19 Nov 1828 of Maria Hirschi of Schangnau, born Stutzmann, wife of Peter the Küher. Peter's son Christian was a Küher in the next parish in 1833, and the family lived at Amsoldingen from 1834, so this is she. The FamilySearch tree's death of 19 Jan 1857 and WikiTree's "before 1849" are superseded.

The context is from the Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz.
  • Parents (probable; upgraded from possible on 28 Sep 2026): The Thierachern register records Maria, baptised 26 Sep 1779, daughter of Hans Stuzman and Ana Feller, citizens of Uebeschi.1 She is taken to be the wife of Peter Hirschi because (1) it is the only baptism of a Maria Stu(t)zmann at Thierachern from 1760 to 1790 in FamilySearch's index; the other two women of that name on the film were already mothers in 1756 (the wife of Jacob Nafzger, indexed Rafzger, Kafzger) and 1772 (the wife of Christen Ischer), so they were born decades earlier;2 (2) her burial entry of Nov 1828 gives her age as 49, which fits a baptism in Sep 1779;14 (3) the godfather of her son in 1814, "Christen Stutzmann, der Mutter Bruder", fits the Christian baptised at Thierachern on 8 Aug 1790, son of Johannes Stutzmann and Anna Feller; the only other Christen Stutzmann baptised there between 1765 and 1795 was a son of Christen Stutzmann and Madlena Müller, born in 1780, and no Maria was baptised to that couple there;7, 13 (4) Stutzmann and Feller relatives of Uebeschi stood godparents to her grandchildren in 1834–1841: Christian Feller, district judge, at Uebeschi (1834), Susanna Stutzmann (1836), Anna Stutzmann, Peter's daughter, probably her niece (1838), Johannes Stutzmann of Uebeschi (1839) and Jakob Feller, the judge's son (1841).16, 17, 18, 19, 20 It falls short of proof because neither the marriage entries of 1803 nor the burial entry names her father.8, 14

  • Godparents and readings: The study reads the 1779 godparents as Hans Stuzman, "Hansen sel. Sohn", Ana Kunz [?] and Christina Feller, "der Mutter Schwester"; the WikiTree profile's earlier reading names Anna Krebs as the second godmother and places Hans Stutzmann, a watchmaker, at Préx d'Areuse near Neuchâtel.1, 24 The Susanna Stutzmann of Uebeschi who was godmother in 1814 is read "née Keller [?]" and the one of 1836 "née Simon"; either one reading is wrong or they are two women.13, 17
  • Birthplace: The register gives the parents' citizenship (Uebeschi), not a place of birth; her Find a Grave memorial says she was born in the village of Uebeschi, which lies in Thierachern parish.25, 5
