Anna Barbara Hegnauer was baptised at Elgg, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, on 3 November 1782, the daughter of Heinrich Hegnauer and Anna Barbara Trachssler.1 In 1806 she married Hans Ulrich Huber at Sirnach, across the cantonal border in the Thurgau, and she raised a large family there. She died at Sirnach on 8 March 1829, nine days before her father.2–4

Childhood

Anna Barbara was the ninth of the fourteen children her parents brought to the Elgg church for baptism between 1768 and 1795.5–6 She was the second daughter to be given her mother's name. The first, Anna Barbara, baptised in 1772, had very probably been buried at five, in March 1778.7–8

Marriage and children

On 15 April 1806, at twenty-three, Anna Barbara married Hans Ulrich Huber at Sirnach, about ten kilometres east of Elgg; the register names her parents, Hans Heinrich Hegnauer and Anna Barbara Trachssler.2

Their children were baptised at Sirnach: Susanna on 10 July 1808, Hans Ulrich on 10 November 1809, Anna Magdalena on 9 February 1811 and Johannes Heinrich on 12 September 1813.9–12 On 5 January 1815 two more were christened on the same day, Anna Sabina and Johannes Ulrich, probably twins.13–14 Three months later, in April 1815, Anna Barbara's mother died at Elgg, aged sixty-six.15 A son, Hans Georg, was also theirs, although the date of his baptism is not known.16–17

Switzerland suffered famine in 1816 and 1817.18 The next child, Anna, was christened on 8 November 1818, and the youngest, Maria Elisabeth, on 14 July 1826, when Anna Barbara was forty-three; her baptism was entered in the Elgg register as well as at Sirnach.19–20 The names echo Anna Barbara's own family: Johannes Heinrich bore her father's name, and Anna Sabina and Maria Elisabeth those of two of her sisters.21–22

Death and legacy

Anna Barbara died at Sirnach on 8 March 1829, aged forty-six, and her death was entered in the Elgg register too.3 Nine days later, on 17 March, her father died at Elgg, past ninety.4 Hans Ulrich Huber outlived her by twenty-one years. He was very probably the Ulrich Huber who was buried at Sirnach on 29 March 1850, aged sixty-seven, and so of about her own age; his burial entry names his wife as Barbara.23

Five of the children married at Sirnach, and each marriage entry names Anna Barbara Hegnauer as the mother. Three of the weddings fell in 1836: Hans Georg married Susanna Büechi on 12 January 1836, Susanna married Salomon Müller on 23 October 1836, and Maria Magdalena married Johann Ludwig Huber on 20 November 1836. Anna married Jakob Brüllmann on 21 December 1841, and Johannes Heinrich married Barbara Müller on 24 February 1851.17, 24–27

Research notes the reasoning, record by record
  • Sources: Every record here is from FamilySearch's indexes of the Elgg and Sirnach registers ("Switzerland, Catholic and Reformed Church Records"; "Switzerland, Baptisms"; "Switzerland Marriages"). FamilySearch's record pages for her mother's burial (1815) and her husband's (1850) were read on 27 Sep 2026; no register image has been read. Most of her entries were indexed from her children's side, with her as the mother; the children themselves are not yet in the study as separate people.
  • Parents: proven: her marriage names Hans Heinrich Hegnauer and Anna Barbara Trachssler (two index entries), and her baptism of 3 Nov 1782 names Heinr Hegnaur and Anna Barbara Trachssler.2, 1 Her burial entries (1829) give the birth year 1783, which fits.3
  • Her death, a small conflict: the Sirnach index dates her burial entry 8 Mar 1829; the Elgg entry of the same death gives death 8 Mar and burial 12 Mar 1829.3 The profile takes 8 Mar as the day of death and 12 Mar as the burial, very probably at Sirnach; the images would confirm it.
  • The twins of 1815 (probable): Anna Sabina and Johannes Ulrich Huber were both christened on 5 Jan 1815, by two entries of the "Switzerland, Baptisms" index.13, 14 Two children of one couple christened on one day were very probably twins, but the images should confirm the date of each.
  • The famine of 1816–17: no child of the couple is indexed between January 1815 and November 1818, a gap that spans the famine. Swiss famines showed above all in a fall in births,18 but the link is an inference only, and a child born and buried in the gap could also be missing from the index.
  • Undated entries: Eleven further index entries name her as the mother, with Hans Ulrich Huber, at baptisms with no date or place: two of a Hans Ulrich, one of an Anna and one of a Joh Ulrich (indexed "A Barbara Hagenauer"), two of a child indexed only as "Huber", and five of a child whose name is not indexed.28 Some are probably second entries of the dated baptisms above (Hans Ulrich 1809, Anna 1818, Johannes Ulrich 1815); others may be children not otherwise known. The images would tell.
  • Hans Georg: three undated baptism entries and the marriage of 12 Jan 1836 name him as their son.16, 17 A groom of 1836 was very probably born by about 1816, so he may have been one of the older children, perhaps the first, but his baptism date is not in the index.
  • Her husband's burial (probable): The burial of H Ulrich Huber at Sirnach on 29 Mar 1850 (died 25 Mar, aged 67, so born about 1783) names his wife as "Barb Hagenaider", read as Barbara Hegnauer; he is taken to be her husband, the only Hans Ulrich Huber married to a Barbara Hegnauer at Sirnach.23 The entry, as indexed, does not say whether he had remarried after 1829.
  • The children's marriages: each entry names the mother as Anna Barbara (or Barb) Hegnauer; the index does not give the children's ages, so Susanna (married 1836), Anna (1841) and Johannes Heinrich (1851) are taken to be the children of those names baptised in 1808, 1818 and 1813. The bride of 20 Nov 1836 is Maria Magdalena, while the daughter baptised in 1811 is A[nna] Magdalena: they may be one woman, or two daughters, one of whose baptisms has not been found.11, 25
