Anna Barbara Trachssler married Heinrich Hegnauer at Elgg, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, on 29 June 1767, when she was about eighteen.1–2 Between 1768 and 1795 she had fourteen children baptised at Elgg, and she died there on 8 April 1815, aged sixty-six.2–4

Marriage and children

Heinrich was about twelve years older than she was.5 Their first child, Hans Rudolf, was baptised on 29 May 1768, eleven months after the wedding, and thirteen more followed: Heinrich (1770), Hans Jacob (1771), Anna Barbara (1772), Elisabetha (1774), Magdalena (1776), Anna Sabina (1778), Heinrich (1780), Anna Barbara (1782), Johannes (1784), Johannes (1786), Anna (1788), Maria Elisabeth (1791) and Zacharias (1795).3–4, 6–17 She was about forty-six when Zacharias, the youngest, was baptised on 23 September 1795.2, 4

Her first years of marriage included the famine that struck Switzerland in 1770 and 1771.18 Three of her children very probably died young. Burials naming their father, Heinrich, record a Heinrich on 13 June 1771, at about seventeen months; an Elisabetha on 11 May 1776, at about eighteen months; and an Anna Barbara, who bore her mother's name, on 1 March 1778, at five.19–21 Both names were given again, to a Heinrich in December 1780 and an Anna Barbara in November 1782.12–13 Johannes, too, was given twice, in 1784 and again in 1786.14–15

Later years

Two more of her children very probably died before her. A Rudolf, son of Heinrich, born in 1768, was buried at Elgg in 1810, and an Anna, daughter of Heinrich, born in 1789, on 15 August 1811, at twenty-two: they fit her eldest son, Hans Rudolf, and her daughter Anna of 1788.22–23

Her daughter Anna Barbara married Hans Ulrich Huber at Sirnach, across the cantonal border in the Thurgau, in April 1806, and the register there names her as the bride's mother.24 On 5 January 1815 two of her Sirnach grandchildren, Anna Sabina and Johannes Ulrich Huber, probably twins, were christened on the same day.25–26

Anna Barbara Trachssler died three months later, on 8 April 1815, aged sixty-six, and was buried at Elgg on 11 April; her burial entry names her husband.2 Heinrich outlived her by fourteen years. When he was buried at Elgg in March 1829, past ninety, his burial entry still named her as his wife.5 Their daughter Anna Barbara had died at Sirnach nine days before him.27

Research notes the reasoning, record by record
  • Sources: Every record here is from FamilySearch's indexes of the Elgg registers, with entries of the same events in the Zürich, Uster and Sirnach registers. FamilySearch's record page for her burial was read on 27 Sep 2026; no register image has been read. She is named as the mother in fourteen baptisms, in her daughter's marriage (1806) and in her husband's burial (1829), but no index entry of her own has been found: even her burial is indexed under her husband's name, as "Heinrich Hegnauers", with her as his wife.2
  • Birth: about 1749, from her age at death, sixty-six.2 Her baptism and her parents have not been found.
  • The wedding in other registers: the wedding of 29 Jun 1767 is also entered in the Zürich register (June 1767; with the bride as "Barbara Tomppler" in a second index series) and, very probably, at Uster on 21 Jun 1767, with the bride as Barbara "Trachsber".28, 29
  • Her death, corrected: Until 28 Sep 2026 the study gave her death as 18 Mar 1829, from an Elgg burial entry of 22 Mar 1829 then read as hers under a wrong given name. That entry is the burial of a man, Heinrich Hegnauer, born about 1753, who died on 18 Mar 1829 and whose death was entered at Elgg as well as at Uster: Heinrich of Uster. Her own burial, of 11 Apr 1815, makes her about eighteen at the wedding of 1767, and one wife fits all fourteen children.
  • The children's burials (probable): The burials of 1771, 1776, 1778, 1810 and 1811 name only the father, Heinrich; the reasons for taking them as this couple's children are on Heinrich's profile.19, 20, 21, 22, 23
  • The famine of 1770–71: the first Heinrich was buried in June 1771, during the famine; his burial entry gives no cause of death, and any link between the two is an inference only.19, 18
