Life story
Ann, whose maiden name is not known, was very probably the mother of Lucy M. Harris, who married James Israel Wilson in 1903. When Lucy died at Aberdeen, Washington, in 1940, her daughter, who gave the particulars for the death certificate, knew her grandfather's name, John Harris, but had "No Record" of her grandmother's.1
Ann was born in October 1844 in Georgia, the child of Georgia-born parents. About 1870 she married John Harris, a South Carolina man some fourteen years older, and they made their home in the far northwest corner of Arkansas. In June 1900 they were farming their own land, free of debt, in Sulphur Springs Township, Benton County. Ann, fifty-five, had borne eleven children, nine of whom were living, and six were still at home: John W., twenty-seven; Jeff, twenty-two; Jery, twenty; Nancy, eighteen; Lucy, sixteen; and Joe, fourteen. She could neither read nor write.2
What became of Ann after 1900 has not been found.

Research notes
- Mother of Lucy (probable, not proven): Ann is taken to be Lucy's mother because she had been John Harris's wife for thirty years in June 1900 and had borne eleven children, and Lucy, 16, was entered as their daughter.2 The census does not name the mother of each child, and an eighteen-year-old "stepson" of John's surnamed Weeks in the same household is unexplained: if he was Ann's son by an earlier marriage, the thirty years of marriage cannot be right. The identification of the household as Lucy's is itself probable, not proven (see Lucy's and John's profiles).
- Maiden name: Unknown. Lucy's death certificate answers "No Record".1 A marriage record of about 1870 (Benton County or a neighbouring county of Arkansas, Missouri or the Indian Territory) would give it.
- An earlier household (lead): In the 1880 census of Sulphur Springs, Rohema A. Harris, 32, born in Georgia, is the wife of John R. D. Harris, 40, with children whose names may match those of 1900 (Jeremiah, 2, and perhaps "Ruther W." and "James D.").3 Her age (about 1848) does not fit Ann's October 1844, and the family has not been linked. "Rohema A." might be a misreading of a name such as Rhoda Ann. A lead only.
- Death: Not found. She was living in June 1900. The 1910 census (Ann Harris, born about 1844 in Georgia, Benton County) is the next search.
