Life story
Carl Lucius Hegnauer is known so far only from family trees, which make him the son of John Hegnauer and his first wife, Catharina Appel, and give his birth as 6 February 1872. His second given name was his grandfather's: John's father was Luzius (Lucius) Hegnauer of Igis, Graubünden.
John and Catharina married in Madison County, Illinois, on 24 August 1869, and in 1870 they were farming near Grantfork, still without children.1–2 Catharina died before 1880, and by June 1880 John was living in Kansas City with his second wife, Mary; no child was with them.3 What became of Carl after his mother's death, and when and where he died, is not known; the author of an Appel family account of Catharina's family could not trace him either.4

- Parentage (unproven): No baptism, census entry or other record naming Carl Lucius as John's son has been found. The family trees give only his name and birth date (6 Feb 1872), without sources. The name Lucius, his paternal grandfather's, supports the trees' placement but does not prove it.
- Birth: recorded only as between 1870 and 1880, the years in which a child of this marriage could have been born (no child at the 1870 census; his mother dead and his father remarried by June 1880).2, 3
- 1880: He was not in his father's household in Kansas City in June 1880, when he would have been about eight.3 He may have been with his mother's family, the Appels of Highland (Jacob Appel and Julia Duft, per the Appel account), or with another relative. The 1880 census of Madison County should be searched for a Carl or Charles Hegnauer or Hagnauer, aged about eight.4
- Caution: Madison County had a separate Hagnauer family (C. G., Charles Gottfried, Robert and Emil Hagnauer married there between 1865 and 1885). Records of a Carl or Charles Hagnauer in the county may belong to that family.
- Not him: Carl A. Hegnauer (19 Jun 1901 – 23 Apr 1982, Broward County, Florida).
