• Rudolf Hegnauer of Seengen (1881) and his wife Helen are the only New York City household with more than a handful of records. Rudolf was born on 16 Oct 1881 at Seengen, Aargau (naturalization 1919, O03253; the same date on his 1917/18 and 1942 draft cards, 1924 passport application and NUMIDENT). He lived in Manhattan and later Queens, and the crew lists of 1920–1951 (listed as a U.S. citizen after 1919) show a merchant seaman's pattern. His wife Helen Erna Caroline (born 7 Jul 1900, Germany) was naturalized in 1944; she died in March 1973 with her last Social Security residence given as "Europe". No children appear.
• Seengen link to Rochester: Rudolf was born in the same village as Jacob Rudolph Hegnauer of Rochester (born 1859). No record connects them, but a nephew or cousin of the Rochester family is the natural hypothesis. It should not be treated as proven.
• A Swiss couple in Manhattan, 1886: Jacob and Eliza Hegnauer, both born in Switzerland, lost an infant son Albert on 22 May 1886 (O00297–O00299). Jacob cannot be identified: Jacob Rudolph of Rochester (arrived April 1884, married Caroline Seip in 1890) would fit in age, but nothing links him to an earlier wife Eliza.
• Igis link: a New York City marriage record names the parents of the bride or groom as Jacob "Thewer" and "Veronica Hegnauer" (O03583). Verena Hegnauer of Igis (H0387, born 1836) married Jakob Theurer; Veronica is a Latin form of Verena. Placed on H0387 as probable. This is the first sign that the Theurer family left Igis.
• Unconnected arrivals and visitors (singletons): Johann (b. 1822, landed 1857), Marie (b. 1833, 1858), Joh. Rudolf (b. 1842, 1863), an unnamed Hegnauer (b. 1847, 1870, "Allemania"), Jacob (b. 1855, 1873), Jacques (b. 1857, 1877), Marie (b. 1853, 1891), Louis (b. 1874, 1892; possibly Louis Arnold of Newark, see New Jersey: Newark (Essex County) and central New Jersey), Edward (b. 1845, 1903), Max of Aarau (b. 1911; visits 1946–1955), Katharina (b. 1881 Germany; landed 1936, at Gallatinville, Columbia Co., in 1950 with a married daughter). Each has a person key so its records stay together; none has a lineage.
• Rudolf Hegnauer, died 15 Sep 1885 at Ironville, Crown Point, Essex Co. (O03119): an iron-mining settlement. Possibly the Joh. Rudolf who landed in 1863 (not proven).

Evidence and conflicts

• Rudolf's birth year varies between 1881 and 1886 across the passenger and crew lists (O02716, 1914, "1886"; later lists 1881–1883); the documents made by him (naturalization, draft cards, passport, NUMIDENT) all give 16 Oct 1881. The 1914 Ellis Island arrival is placed on him as possible only.
• The 1930 New England crew-list entries (O03329, O03330) are standardized by FamilySearch to "New England, Wood, West Virginia"; they are ship lists, not a residence.
• Helen's SSDI entry (O03429) gives "Europe"; the matching address-index entry (O02467) has the same birth month and year.

Open questions

1. Rudolf's naturalization file (1919, New York County) should give his date and ship of arrival and perhaps his parents; compare with the Seengen register and the Rochester family.
2. Jacob and Eliza (Manhattan, 1886): the death certificate of the infant Albert gives the address and perhaps the parents' ages.
3. The Theurer–Hegnauer marriage in New York City (O03583): date and names of the couple are not in the extract; read the record.
