Indexed on Ancestry as "U.S., Union Soldiers Compiled Service Records, 1861-1865" (collection 2344), whose record ids equal the Fold3 image ids.
• Read on screen on 2026-09-26 (signed in to Fold3 through Ancestry; no sign-in wall). Nothing downloaded. Every card image in both files was read. Handwritten readings in [brackets with ?] are uncertain.
• The cards are abstracts copied from the original rolls by the War Department's Record and Pension Office (about 1890-1910). They are derivative of the muster rolls, but they are the only surviving form most researchers can see.

The files

Benton Hussars: there is no separate Benton Hussars file. His two Benton Hussars roll cards (Co. A, Aug–Dec 1861) and the muster-in card for "Capt. Pfaff's Co., Missouri Mounted Vols." are filed in the 5th Missouri Cavalry jacket, each footnoted "This organization subsequently became Co. A, 5 Missouri Cav." Searches of Ancestry 2344 for John Hecknauer, John Hagenauer (exact), surname Hegnauer (exact), John Hegenauer + Missouri and John Hagemaur (exact) found no other file for him.

What the cards add or correct

• Continuous service, no gap. He is on every bi-monthly roll from Aug 1861 to Aug 1864 (18 rolls) and is marked present on 17 of them. The one exception is absent on 30 Jun 1864, "on expedition with Genl A. J. Smith". The two special musters (18 Aug 1862 and 15 Apr 1863) do not state presence. Not one card records sickness, hospital, desertion, capture, wound or furlough.
• Muster-in place: Bird's Point, Mo., not St. Louis. He was enrolled at Camp Benton, St. Louis (1 Aug 1861 on the 5th Cavalry cards; 13 Aug 1861, the company's own organization date, on the first 4th Cavalry card) and mustered in on 18 Sep 1861 at Bird's Point, Mississippi Co., Mo., opposite Cairo. The National Homes register's "enlisted 18 Sep 1861, St. Louis" conflates the two.
• Age 20 at muster-in (18 Sep 1861) and 24 at muster-out (Oct 1864) both fit a birth on 13 Nov 1840. This is a second identifier beside the name (plus the unit sequence in the pension index).
• Promotion to corporal between 28 Feb and 15 Apr 1863. He is a private on the Jan-Feb 1863 roll and a corporal on the special muster of 15 Apr 1863 and every later roll. This settles "private in, corporal out": he did not enlist as a corporal.
• Mustered out at St. Louis for expiration of term, Oct 1864. The day is 26 [?] on the Sept-Oct 1864 card; the muster-out roll's dates are overwritten. The National Homes register gives 25 Oct. He was owed a $100 bounty at discharge.
• Name forms on the cards: Hecknauer, Hagenauer, Hagnauer, Hegenauer, Hegemauer, Hagemauer [?]; jacket cross-references Hagenauer and Hagemaur.

Presence at the engagements in sources/military/civil-war-and-westward.md

Rulings: present-documented (a roll or card places him at the event itself); present on the bracketing rolls (likely) (present on the rolls before and after, with nothing recorded between); absent (a roll records him absent, with the reason); no roll. A bi-monthly "present" means present on the day the roll was taken (the last day of the period), not every day in between. Company-level participation is taken from the source note; even where the company fought, the rolls cannot show that he himself was in the action.

Consequences for other rulings in the source note (for the lead to integrate)

• Tupelo, 14-15 Jul 1864 (ruled "not present: the regiment was not there"). John was absent from his company on 30 Jun 1864 "on expedition with Genl A. J. Smith", and Smith's Tupelo expedition left La Grange on 5 Jul. So John himself may have been with a detachment in Smith's column. This is possible only: no July card places him there, and the next roll (31 Aug) is the Oxford expedition's. The ruling should become "presence unknown; possibly with a detachment under A. J. Smith (absent on expedition with Smith at 30 Jun)".
• Fredericktown, 21 Oct 1861 and Belmont, 7 Nov 1861: the Aug-Oct and Nov-Dec 1861 rolls mark him present at 31 Oct and 31 Dec. This supports "with his company" but does not change the company-level rulings.
• Knight's Cove, 19 Jun 1862 (Co. B): he was present with Co. A on 30 Jun 1862; the ruling "not present" stands.
• Union City capture, 10 Jul 1863 (Cos. C and E): he was present with Co. B on 30 Jun and 31 Aug 1863; this supports "not captured".
• Pursuit of Price, Oct 1864: mustered out at St. Louis for expiration of term, Oct 1864; the ruling "not present" is confirmed.
• 2nd Missouri Infantry lead ("Hegnauer, John", Co. B): Ancestry 2344/234238514 (Fold3 jacket "Hegnauer, John, Co. B, 2 Missouri Inf. (3 Months, 1861), Private", one card 1672846) was also read. The card (234238515) is a Co. Muster-out Roll, Co. B, Rifle Battalion, Mo. Inf. (attached to 2 Reg't Missouri Infantry, 3 months, 1861), dated St. Louis Arsenal, Aug 1, 1861, muster-out to date July 31, 1861. He was enrolled June 15, 1861 at St. Louis for 3 months and mustered in June [3?], 1861 at St. Louis. Remarks: "age 26, only roll on which name is borne." Age 26 in 1861 (born about 1835) does not fit our John, who was 20 on 18 Sep 1861 by his own muster-in card. Probably a different man; do not attach it to H0002. The dates alone would not have excluded him, since the service ended the day before John's 1 Aug enrollment.

Ancestry (the one tree change from this task)

• Saved the 5th Missouri Cavalry file (Ancestry 2344/215629932, "John Hecknauer, age 20, 1861, Fifth Cavalry") to John (102705381227) with Save → Save to someone in your tree → Hegnauer/Putt → John Hegnauer 1840-1917. The merge panel offered only Name "John Hecknauer" (DIFFERENT): left unchecked, with Cite source kept (it is his own service file), so John's Name now has 19 sources.
• Attached both CMSR files (2344/215629932 and the already-saved 4th Cavalry file 2344/211860511) to his Military fact (Bet. 18 Sep 1861 and 25 Oct 1864). Before: 1 source (the NPS index 1138/3474936); after: 3 sources (checked after a reload).
• No facts were edited. John has one pending hint, which was not reviewed (outside this read-only task).
