Dorothea Hegnauer was born on 24 May 1856 at Basel, canton Basel-Stadt, Switzerland, and baptised on 8 June 1856, the daughter of Samuel Hegnauer and Susanna Hausmann. On 25 April 1877 she married Gustav Friedrich Eckerlin at Müllheim, Baden, Germany. Two children are known: Dorothea Katharina Schmidt, baptised on 18 March 1877 at Basel, and Gustav Friedrich.
