Rudolf Hegnauer married Susanna Kuhn on 8 November 1681 at Volketswil, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, the parish of Hegnau, the village from which the Hegnauer name comes.^1–3 Between 1684 and 1697 the parish register records at least five children of theirs, three of them daughters named Rägula.^4–8 Rudolf was very probably Hans Rudolf Hegnauer, baptised at Volketswil in 1641, whose first wife, Verena Fürer, had been buried four and a half months before this wedding.^9–10

Children

Rudolf and Susanna's first child, Rägula, was baptised on 8 January 1684 and was very probably the Rägeli, daughter of Rudi, buried on 12 August 1687, at three and a half.^{4, 11} A son, Hans, baptised on 30 August 1685 to a Rudolf Hegnauer and a Catharina, may also have been theirs.¹² On 7 July 1689 Rudolf and Susanna had another daughter baptised Rägula, and on 11 December 1691 a third, Rägula; no burial of the second has been found.^5–6 A Margreth, daughter of Rudi Hegnauer, was buried on 11 December 1693; no baptism of hers has been found.⁷ The last child found, Verena, was baptised on 14 March 1697.⁸

Later years

Rudolf is last recorded at Verena's baptism in March 1697.⁸ In Hegnau itself, the old chapel of Our Lady, the Chappeli, first mentioned in 1503/04,² had by then a clock on its low, blunt tower; the commune's accounts for 1696 pay the clock-keeper (Zytenrichter), Jacob Grossmann, his agreed fee of 4 pounds 6 shillings, and 1 pound 2 shillings more for cleaning and mending the clock.¹³

Hans Rudolf was buried at Volketswil on 9 November 1699, aged fifty-eight.¹⁴ Susanna outlived him by eighteen years and was buried there on 18 January 1718, aged sixty-eight.¹⁵ What became of the younger Rägulas and of Verena is not known.

Estimated from his marriage in 1681. If he is Hans Rudolf Hegnauer, as is very probable, he was baptised at Volketswil on 4 Apr 1641 (see Research Notes).

No record of his birth or age names him as the husband of Susanna Kuhn. A man who married in 1681 was very probably born before about 1661. The identification with Hans Rudolf, baptised on 4 Apr 1641, is probable, not proven.

The Volketswil marriage register (FamilySearch index) records Rudolf "Hegnadmer" [Hegnauer] and Susanna Kun [Kuhn] on 8 Nov 1681. Rudolf (Rudolff, Rüdi, Rudolph) and Susanna (Kuch, Kuhn, Kern) are named as the parents at four Volketswil baptisms, 1684–1697, the last of them indexed as Rudolph Hegnauer and Susanna Kuhn, and Susanna was buried in 1718 as the wife of Rudi Hegnauer.

Susanna's age. her burial gives her age as 68, so she was born about 1650; she would have been about 31 at the wedding and about 47 at Verena's baptism in 1697.

No image has been read.¹⁶ The index gives the place of these entries only as "Schweiz", which FamilySearch standardized as "Schwyz"; they are the register of Volketswil.
Names: Rudolf (1681, 1689), Rudolff (1684, 1685), Rüdi (1691), Rudolph (1697), and Rudi, the familiar form, at the burials of 1687 and 1693 and at Susanna's burial in 1718. The index reads the surname Hegnadmer (1681), Hegneüwer (1684, 1685), Hegnarwer (1687), Hependwer (1689), Kegendwer (1691), Heynadwer (1693), Hegnauer (1697) and Hegnauwer (1718); the profile uses Hegnauer. Susanna's surname is indexed Kun (1681), Kuch (1684), Kuhn (1689, 1697, 1718) and Kern (1691).
Very probably Hans Rudolf (not merged): Rudolf is taken to be Hans Rudolf Hegnauer, baptised on 4 Apr 1641, because (1) Verena Fürer, wife of Rudi Hegnauer, was buried on 24 Jun 1681, and Rudolf married Susanna Kuhn four and a half months later;^{10, 1} (2) Hans Rudolf is the only Rudolf in the Hegnauer baptisms of the register, and no other Rudolf Hegnauer appears in it as a husband or father between 1666 and 1699;⁹ (3) the Rudi buried at Volketswil on 9 Nov 1699 was born in 1641 by the index, and Susanna was buried in 1718 as the wife of Rudi Hegnauer;^{14, 15} (4) Hans Rudolf would have been 40 at this wedding and 55 at Verena's baptism in 1697, which fits. The study keeps the two profiles apart until an image settles it: the burial entries of 1699 (DGS 8120584, image 565) and 1718 (image 571) may name Rudi's wife and Susanna's husband in full, and the marriage entry of 1681 (image 429) may call the groom a widower.
The children: the first Rägula (1684) is linked to the Rägeli buried in 1687 by the name and the father's (probable).¹¹ The baptism of Hans (30 Aug 1685) names the father Rudolff but the mother "Catharina Kurnin", so he is only possibly theirs.¹² Margreth's burial (1693) names only the father, Rudi (probable). A third daughter named Rägula in 1691 suggests that the second had died (an inference); her burial should be sought under all spellings.
Susanna's age: her burial gives her age as 68, so she was born about 1650; she would have been about 31 at the wedding and about 47 at Verena's baptism in 1697. The images should confirm the age.¹⁵
A lead for a Rägula (not linked): a Regula Hegnauer married Jacob Stötschi (also indexed Götschi) at Dübendorf, Zürich, on 28 Mar 1719, and a daughter, Cleophea, was baptised there on 14 Nov 1719.^{17, 18} No record names her parents. The Rägula of 1689 would then have been 29, and the Rägula of 1691 27. If she was one of them, her daughter bore the name of Hans Rudolf's mother, Cleophe. This is a lead, not evidence.
