James Ernest Hegnauer was born on 16 September 1880 at La Chaux-de-Fonds, canton Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the son of Wilhelm (William Nicolas) Hegnauer and Maria Zwinkel. Censuses possibly list him at Running Water, Sheridan County, Nebraska, in 1910 and at Black Diamond, King County, Washington, in 1920. He registered for the draft at Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, in 1942. James died in December 1948 at Newark and was buried in Woodland Cemetery, Newark.
