Jacob Hegnauer, called Jagli, lived in the parish of Volketswil, in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland, which takes in Hegnau, the village from which the Hegnauer name comes.1–3 Between 1662 and 1676 he and his wife, Anna Gul, had six children baptised there, and three of them very probably died as children, two of them within a fortnight in the autumn of 1676.1, 4–7

Marriage

The record of Jagli and Anna's wedding has not been found; they were married by December 1662.1 Anna's surname was very probably Gul, the name of a family of the parish into which Hegnauers married more than once. The earliest Hegnauer wedding found in the register, on 26 June 1597, seems to be that of Elsbeth Hegnauer and Hans Gul; an Anna Hegnauer, wife of Heinrich Gul, had a daughter baptised at Volketswil; and in 1723 Magdalena Hegnauer married another Heinrich Gul.8–10

Children

Jagli and Anna's first child, Heinrich, was baptised on 4 December 1662, and Barbara on 24 July 1665.1, 11 A Barbeli Hegnauer buried on 4 June 1670, when Barbara was not quite five, may have been she.12 Verena was baptised on 29 January 1667 and Jacob on 1 August 1671.13–14 Hans, baptised on 12 July 1674, very probably lived less than a week: a Hansseli Hegnauer was buried on 18 July.5, 15

In the autumn of 1676 Jagli and Anna had a daughter baptised and buried two of their children. Susanna was baptised on 17 September.4 On 19 October the parish buried Jacobli, son of Jagli, and on 2 November Verena, daughter of Jagli: very probably their Jacob, aged five, and their Verena, aged nine.6–7 They were two of the five Hegnauer children buried in the parish between 27 August and 2 November that year; the others were two children of Rudolf Hegnauer and a son of Felix Hegnauer.16–18

Later years

Jagli is last recorded in that autumn of 1676, as the father at Susanna's baptism and at the burials that followed.4, 7 He may have been the Jagli Hegnauer buried at Volketswil on 6 December 1685.19 Anna's death has not been found, and nothing more is known of Heinrich or of Susanna.

  • Sources: FamilySearch's index of the Volketswil Reformed church book, Taufen, Heiraten, Tote 1588–1801 (film 889427, item 1; DGS 8120584). No image has been read.20 The index gives the place of these entries only as "Schweiz", which FamilySearch standardized as "Schwyz"; they are the register of Volketswil.
  • Names: Jacob at the baptisms of 1662, 1667, 1671 and 1674, and Jagli, the familiar form, at those of 1665 and 1676 and at his children's burials of 1676 (once indexed "Jacgli"). The register writes the surname Hegneüwer; the burial index misreads it Hegachter and Hegnactter. The profile uses Hegnauer.
  • Anna's surname (probable reading): indexed Gürt (1662, 1667, 1671), Gurt (1665), Güll (1674) and Güt (1676), and read as Gul, the name of a family of the parish. The images should confirm it.
  • The marriage: not found in the Volketswil index, which the study searched as a whole for the name's spellings. It may have been recorded in another parish.
  • Parents (not linked): no record names them. Jacob, baptised at Volketswil on 19 Apr 1635, son of Andreas Hegnauer and Anna Eberhart (see his profile), would have been 27 at Heinrich's baptism and is the likeliest of the register's Jacobs.21 Hans Jacob, son of Marx Hegnauer, baptised on 10 Jun 1644 (see his profile), would have been 18,22 and the Jagli whose children by Lisabeth Winkler were baptised in the 1620s belongs to the generation before (see his profile).23 No link is made.
  • A gap, 1667–1671: no baptism of theirs is indexed between Verena's (Jan 1667) and Jacob's (Aug 1671). A child born in those years could be missing from the index under a spelling not yet recognised.
  • Barbeli (1670, possible): the burial of 4 Jun 1670 names no kin.12 Barbara (1665) is the only Hegnauer girl of the name baptised in the register in those years, but that alone does not prove the link.
  • Hansseli (1674, probable): the burial of 18 Jul 1674 names no kin; it came six days after Hans's baptism.5 Rudolf Hegnauer's son Hans, baptised in February 1672, could also have been called Hansseli,24 but the timing favours Jagli's son.
  • Jacobli and Verena (1676, probable): both burials name the father Jagli, and they are matched to the baptisms of Jacob (1671) and Verena (1667) by the child's name.6, 7 The index gives no cause of death for any of the five Hegnauer burials of 1676.
  • His burial (possible): the burial of 6 Dec 1685 ("Jagli Begnandwer") names no kin and gives no age, so it could be another man of the name.19
