Life story
Helen Edith Hegnauer was born on 23 May 1911, the younger daughter of Leonard Hegnauer, an agronomist, and Clara Edith Baker.1 Her father was then working for the Oregon Agricultural College, and by 1916 the family had moved to Pullman, Washington (see his profile). In 1920 Helen, aged eight, was living at Pullman with her parents and her elder sister, Dorothy, and the family was still there in 1930.2–3
On 5 December 1933, at Pullman, Helen married Richard W. Yeo; the marriage record names her parents as Leonard Hegnauer and Clara Edith Baker.4 When her father died at Spokane in November 1963, she was listed among his survivors as "Mrs. Richard W. Yeo".5 Where she lived afterwards, and when she died, have not yet been found.

Her father's alumni record gives the date. The 1920 census index gives her birthplace as Washington, but her father was then working in Oregon (see Research Notes), so the place is left open.
Her father's University of Illinois alumni record, published in her childhood, names her "Helen Edith, b. May 23, 1911"; her marriage index gives a birth year of 1911 and the 1920 census index about 1912. No birth record has been seen.

The Washington county marriage index names the bride, Helen Hegnauer, born 1911, daughter of Leonard Hegnauer and Clara Edith Baker, and the groom, Richard W. Yeo, at Pullman on 5 Dec 1933. An index of her father's 1963 obituary names a married daughter, "Mrs. Richard W. Yeo". The record image has not been read.

- Identity of "Mrs. Richard W. Yeo": The marriage index names Helen Hegnauer, born 1911, daughter of Leonard Hegnauer and Clara Edith Baker, as the bride of Richard W. Yeo in 1933.4 Leonard had only two daughters, and the other, Dorothy, was "Miss Dorothy Hegnauer" in 1963 and never married (see her profile). So the married daughter of the 1963 obituary index is Helen.5
- Birthplace (open): The 1920 census index (and the old family tree) gives Washington, but her father was an agronomist of the Oregon Agricultural College at Corvallis from 1910 until about 1916, so she may well have been born in Oregon. The 1930 census entry and her Social Security record should settle it.2
