Daniel W. Whitener is known only as the father of Sterling Wilfong Whitener, the minister and missionary to China who married Marie A. Hegnauer at Butler, Bates County, Missouri, in 1919.1 The family tree takes his name, and that of his wife, Alice Kineard, from the index of Sterling's North Carolina death certificate of 1950, where the father's given name is read as "Danied W."; the certificate itself has not been read by the study.2 Nothing else is yet known of his life.

  • Place: Whitener is a common surname in Catawba and Burke counties, North Carolina, and the family tree (without a source) gives Sterling's birth as 14 Aug 1894 at Hickory. The family is not proven to have lived there.
  • Leads: read Sterling's death certificate (North Carolina State Archives; also on Ancestry and FamilySearch) for his parents' names and birthplaces; the 1900 and 1910 censuses of Catawba and Burke counties for a Daniel W.
